The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC), also known as Continuing Certification, is a requirement of certifying boards that physicians must participate in continuing education specific to their specialty. Specific requirements vary from Board to Board and are routinely updated. We encourage you to check with your Board(s) often regarding requirements.
There are four parts of MOC:
- Part I Professionalism and Professional Standing
- Part II Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment
- Part III Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills
- Part IV Improvement in Medical Practice (Quality Improvement/Performance Improvement)
Part II Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment

Multidisciplinary projects are encouraged, please consider choosing multiple Boards when developing an MOC Part IV project.
Performance Improvement (PI CME) is also possible for some QI/PIP projects if the CME office is notified of the project early enough in the process.
PI CME involves a long-term, three-stage process by which a physician or group of physicians learn about specific performance measures, assess their practice using the selected performance measures, implement interventions to improve performance related to these measures over a useful interval of time, and then reassess their practice using the same performance measures. PI CME can award up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ and may qualify for satisfying certain specialty board maintenance of certification requirements.
Stage A: Learning from current practice performance assessment
Stage B: Learning from the application of PI to patient care
Stage C: Learning from the evaluation of the PI CME effort
