Welcome to the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program. We are vested in the future of our specialty and are currently recruiting up to 3 fellows to join our growing team in July 2025.
Our program is an integral part of the ambitious and successful development of a comprehensive system of care for children with mental health needs at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD), the only freestanding children’s hospital in the state. This expansion is community-driven and committed to serving our vast and diverse locality with equitable access to high quality pediatric care. Home of the first operational NATO headquarters in America as well as the largest naval station in the world, our region is a hidden gem with a subtropical climate, the arts scene of a large metropolitan area, the luxury of locality choices (city, beach, and suburban living), and a historical culture that values equality and inclusion.
Stellar faculty have joined from around the country to shepherd in our shared vision of growth at CHKD and to prepare the next generation of child and adolescent psychiatrists. While 2023 was the first year of our program, the breadth of experience from our faculty resulted in the robust development of a training community founded in active engagement and collaborative experiences with both pediatric and general psychiatry residents and an expanding cohort of medical students interested in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Our fellows benefit from opportunities to train in psychopharmacology and a multitude of psychotherapy modalities across a range of healthcare settings including inpatient psychiatric units specifically designed for pre-adolescent and adolescent populations as well as children with neurodevelopmental disorders; partial hospitalization program; intensive outpatient program; children’s medical hospital; psych-med unit; and outpatient clinics. Our clinical services standalone outside our program, allowing flexibility to adapt clinical experiences to our fellows’ individualized training needs and interests within the framework required by the ACGME. Our mission is to graduate compassionate and competent child and adolescent psychiatrists with strong professional values, devoted to working with children and their families, primed for assumption of leadership roles in our specialty.
Thank you for your consideration of our program and, most importantly, for your interest in the rewarding and fascinating field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry!
Sincerely,
Mariam Rahmani, MD, DFAACAP
